Despite chilly weather on January 9th, 2024, UT Elementary was brimming with energy as students presented the results of their investigations during the annual Science Fair!
This tradition at UT Elementary is designed to foster the love of scientific phenomena and curiosity for students, families, and community members alike. Research consistently highlights the significant value of science education, emphasizing its role in developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deeper understanding of the world. Beyond just factual knowledge, developing these skills cultivates a scientific mindset for active engagement while fostering an interest in high-demand STEM-related job skills.
Together, the community members and Science Fair judges ignited the passion and fueled enthusiasm for STEAM education. Students showcased a wide range of projects featuring unique topics such as: How much time it takes for liquids to dissolve salt, the effects of music on plant growth, which beverages stain teeth the most, and even which classroom door handles consistently had the most germs!
Following the local Science Fair, twelve projects were selected to advance to the Greater Austin Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GARSEF) in February of 2025!
The success of this year’s fair was made possible by Mr. Koeffler, the award-winning STEAM teacher at UT Elementary, his incredibly hard-working students, as well as the incredible support from our community partners, both in and out of the University system, who dedicated their time and expertise to inspire the next generation of thinkers and innovators. A special thanks to:

“I am incredibly grateful to be a part of such a powerful and affirming community of stakeholders. Together, we planted the seeds for future scientists, artists, and engineers to grow and develop! This event could not have been possible without our volunteers generously donating their time and expertise.” – Mr. Koeffler
Stay tuned to see what’s next for the incredible scholars of UT Elementary and the wonderful community that comes together to support them!
