Faculty and staff from UT Elementary School and UT-University Charter School (UT-UCS) came together to celebrate the upcoming school year at the annual convocation ceremony at UT Elementary School on Friday, Aug. 4.
Dressed in capes, masks, and tutus, the teachers worked together in a number of activities revolving around the “Everyday Superhero” theme. Superintendent Melissa Chavez gave a rousing opening, discussing the importance of accountability. “Each of us must take personal ownership to meet our goals,” she told the group. “We will fight for kids every day.” She laid out the goals for the year which touched on attendance, retention, and academic success. Each campus presented their superpowers, which included “We don’t believe in Mission Impossible;” conquering “I can’t” and “I won’t;” and “Everyone, every day, every way”
After a fun-filled day of learning and sharing, the large gathering of educators welcomed new faculty and staff and honored the 2016-17 award winners from both UT-UCS and UT Elementary. The honorees include:
Brenda Deemer, Teacher of the Year, Special Education Teacher at UT-UCS
Charles Ross, Rookie of the Year, High School Math and Science Teacher at UT-UCS
Abraham Cruz, Staff of the Year, IT Specialist at UT-UCS
Megan Rojo, Teacher of the Year, Fourth- and Fifth-Grade Math Intervention Specialist at UT Elementary School
Kameron Koeffler, Rookie of the Year, Third-Grade Teacher at UT Elementary School
Michelle Martinez, Staff of the Year, PEIMS Coordinator and Administrative Associate at UT Elementary School
