Parent Information and Resources – School Safety
Keeping students safe is the number one priority of UT Elementary School. We strive to provide physical, social, and emotional safe places for students to learn and grow at school and we partner with families to help ensure that students remain safe outside of the school day. We know it takes a village, and we strive to be proactive and productive partners in the success and health of all our students!
The following resources provided to parents have been created by state agencies, local programs, and highly regarded state and national organizations with missions to improve the safety of all students.

- Parental Notification:
- UTES follows all state law and TEA guidance regarding required parental notification a wide variety of circumstances in regard to school safety – certain emergencies or threats of violence that occur at school, suspected dating violence, threat assessment and investigations, etc.
- UTES Parents and Guardians are automatically enrolled in Remind, the school messaging platform, to receive these required notifications using the information provided during registration. If you are not receiving messages from Remind, please contact the front office.

- UTES follows all state law and TEA guidance regarding behavioral threat assessments. Parents will be informed if a threat assessment is necessitated by their child’s behavior in or out of school.

- The UT Elementary School Student Handbook contains all policies related to bullying, including cyberbullying. Please reference the current handbook for more information.

School Safety and Security Committee – UT Elementary School
Under provisions of Section 37.109 of the Texas Education Code, the School Safety and Security Committee (previously known as the Health and Safety Committee) is established by the School Management Board to develop and implement emergency plans aligned with the district’s multi-hazard emergency operations plan, provide periodic recommendations for updates, and review safety audits and reports and for accuracy and impact on our campus.
UT Elementary’s School Safety and Security Committee is led by:

- Autumn Leal-Shopp, Ed.D., LSSP, NCSP, Assistant Superintendent
Public Notice: The next scheduled School Safety and Security Committee meeting will take place:
- Thursday, February 18, 2026
- 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
- All members of the school community are encouraged to report concerns or make suggestions for public discussion at the next School Safety and Security Meeting by completing the Reporting and Request Parent & Community Portal for the SSSC. Reports may be made anonymously.
- Individuals may attend meetings in person or online.
- To observe or make comments at the committee meeting, please notify Dr. Autumn Leal at 512-699-5142 at least one hour prior to scheduled meeting.

School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)
A SHAC is a school board appointed advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. By law, a majority of the members must be persons who are parents of students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district. Texas law (Texas Education Code, Title 2, Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004) requires the establishment of a SHAC for every school district. SHACs are required to meet at least four times each year.

Local Wellness Policy
A local school wellness policy is a written document of official policies that guides a school district’s efforts to establish a school environment that promotes students’ health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.
The purpose of the local wellness policy is to ensure that our mission is realized by addressing the following components of school wellness:

Parent Letter Regarding Safe Firearm Storage
Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The attached information will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms.

Title IX
Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Title IX protects all members of our campus community who experience sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, interpersonal violence (including dating and domestic violence), stalking, or discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. These protections apply to students, faculty, staff, contractors, applicants and campus visitors. We are committed to creating and fostering a campus environment free from all forms of sex discrimination.
Any person may report an incident of sexual assault, interpersonal violence (including domestic and dating violence), stalking, sexual harassment, and sex discrimination to the Title IX Coordinator, via email at titleix@austin.utexas.edu, via mail at PO Box 8118, Austin, TX 78713-8118, or by calling 512-232-3992, regardless of whether the person reporting is the person alleged to be subject to the complained-of behavior. Also, any person may report incidents anonymously via an online reporting form.
